The California-based church works together with the organization Feeding America in operating the monthly food bank. Feeding America is one of the leading hunger-relief charities in the United States. The organization’s mission is to feed America’s hungry citizens through a nationwide network of member food banks and to engage the country in the fight to end hunger. For Mercy Church in San Luis Obispo, feeding the hungry is a manifestation of Jesus’ love for the poor.

Although the United States is seen as the land of plenty, for 1 in 6 people in the country, hunger is a reality. In 2010, 48.8 million Americans lived in food-insecure households. Of this number, 16.2 million are children, with the states of District of Columbia, Oregon, Arizona, Arkansas, and, Texas registering high number of kids living in food-insecure households. At Mercy Church in San Luis Obispo, the day begins with a prayer

For Mercy Church, a San Luis Obispo-based ministry, praying is fundamental in one’s growth as a Christian. Just like what is written in the Bible, the early disciples regarded prayer as the most important part of their lives. Acts 9:1 reads, “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives."

For Christians, praying is their way to commune with God. As written in 1 Thessalonians 5: 17-18, "pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus," a Christian life is not complete without the presence of prayer. Thus, at Mercy Church in San Luis, Obispo, members are encouraged to start their day by praying in order to grow more intimate with God.

The ministry encourages its members to have prayer mornings -- an hour is set aside for personal devotion, reading, and meditating on God’s word, then praying for one’s needs. The next hour is dedicated to praying as a group for the church’s needs, the community, and other special requests. For the church, to live a victorious Christian life, prayer is essential.

Mercy Church: Shedding God's light on others through outreach programs

Teaching its members that all people have the power to positively change the lives of those around them, Mercy Church makes sure that it provides churchgoers with many opportunities to help others. The religious institution offers people the chance to participate in different outreach programs so that they can discover not only how blessed they are but also how joyful it is to provide hope in other people’s lives.

The following are the outreach programs that the church organizes for the less fortunate:

Adopt-a-Block. Adopt-a-Block allows families to open their homes to the homeless. Sharing their food, beds, and clothes, families can realize that their blessings are given to them so that they can learn how to give.

Food Bank. In cooperation with Feeding America, Mercy Church feeds the hungry through the Food Bank that is open every second Tuesday of every month.

The Wardrobe. Realizing that clothing is one of the most necessary things in life, the church calls its members to donate their second-hand clothes and shoes so that ill-fated families will at least have something to warm them up during the cold nights.

By letting people partake in these programs, Mercy Church hopes that they will realize that each smile, each “thank you,” and each hug are signs that if God is present in their hearts, life will be ultimately sweeter.
